Funeral services for former Crisp County sheriff, Curtis O. Joiner of Cordele, will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Lebanon section of Zion Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 4 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Joiner, 84, passed away Monday, August 3, 2009 at Crisp Regional Hospital. He was born in Dooly County and was the son of the late Willie James and Versie Gamble Joiner. Mr. Joiner was the owner and operator of a retail car sales business and a member of Third Street Baptist Church. He was a well known schoolboy athlete and local baseball player, and was signed by the Cleveland Indians of the American League as a pitcher to play on their branch clubs in the Class D Florida-Georgia League. After serving in the U.S. Army, he returned to his hometown and worked in sales with the Albany Candy Co., Farmers Insurance Co., and later the American Bakery Co. (Merita Bread Co.). Through his job he made many friends and developed good business values. In 1961, he decided to run for sheriff of Crisp County and defeated 14 other candidates. He served a four-year term from 1962-66. He was a member of the Georgia Sheriff's Association, the Peace Officers Association and the Fox Hunters Association. Mr. Joiner is survived by his wife, Barbara Joiner of Cordele; two daughters and their husbands, Jerilyn and Jack Cromer and Denise and John Dominici, all of Cordele; three step-children and their spouses, Roxann and Wes Vinson of Bell Chasse, LA, Craig and Joni Coffee of Pensacola, FL, and Dawn and Hugh Harrell of Leesburg; two brothers, Hulette Joiner of Macon and Donald Joiner, of Moultrie; four grandchildren, Julie Doster, Jason Cromer, Tara Dominici and Allison Dominici; two great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
